Dogs are faithful companions and valued members of the family for all the peoples of the world, but how do you really know the best friend man? While many may take for granted common dog, it is their heightened senses, their ability to learn simply by strengthening and observation as well as their advanced form of social cognition that truly sets apart from the pack.

Dogs have great meaning. Although sight can vary from breed to breed, all dogs have the smell and hearing abilities that are far superior to humans. Dogs can hear sound frequencies above and below the range of human and detect the source of a sound and hear sounds four times the distance we can.

Modern dogs are the ancestors of the wolf in money, they have smaller heads and feet of a wolf of comparable size. The dogs have inherited the structure of the social hierarchy of wolves, and are described as pack animals. Unlike the wolf, however, dogs are omnivores and were observed to eat so many fruits and plants in nature.

The dog was domesticated by humans about 15,000 years, what wonders exactly how it happened. There are more size, appearance and behavior changes in dogs than in any other animal home. The dogs were initially high for pulling loads, hunting and guard and it was assumed that dogs may have played a large role in helping humans to cross the Bering Strait by pulling sleds.

Today, dogs are used in new channels. They work as rescuers, breeders, bomb and drug detection, as well as roles in services for mentally and physically disabilities.

Life is a great equalizer between humans and dogs with canine with a lifetime much shorter than we appreciate. The oldest dog on record lived to the age of 24, but the average lifespan for most dogs is between 10 to 12 years. Large dogs like Great Danes and Irish greyhounds live in May to six years, while smaller dogs such as Toy Poodles and Tibetan Spaniels can live up 15 years or beyond.

 • The current population of dogs is estimated at around 400 million euros.

 • Dogs are color blind to red and green shades.

 • The best known is an English Mastiff dog weighing 343 pounds!

 • The largest known dog was a Great Dane from 42.4 inches at the shoulder.

 • The smallest known dog is a Yorkshire Terrier, it was 2.5 inches at the shoulder and weighed 4 ounces.

 • The dogs are both hunters and scavengers, but are not sure of other predators. Wolves, leopards, tigers and hyenas are known to prey on dogs.

So next time you see a dog, take a moment to appreciate everything they do for us and how they really earned their keep as our best friend for thousands of years!
