Trent Consultants News: Adults who use pet therapy during recovery from total joint replacement surgery required 50 percent fewer painkillers than those who do not. These results were presented at the 18th annual conference of the International Society Anthrozoology and of the First Conference Human Animal Interaction (HAI), Kansas City, Mo.
"Evidence suggests that assisted therapy animal (AAT) can have a positive effect on a patient's psychosocial, emotional and physical well-being, "said Julia Havey, RN, presenter of the study and Senior Systems Analyst, Department of Medical Information Systems Center, Loyola University Health System (LUHS). "These data further confirm these advantages and build the case for extending the use of pet therapy in the recovery. "
Trent Consultants News: Animal lover Havey, and his colleague Frances Vlassis, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, began to raise puppies to become assistance dogs for more than ten years ago through a program called Canine Companions for Independence (CCI). The nonprofit organization provides highly trained assistance dogs to people physical disabilities and development charge.
"As nurses, we are committed to improving the quality of life for others, "said Vlassis, associate professor and chairman of Health Systems Management and Policy, Loyola University Chicago Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing. "This service experience has provided us with a unique way to combine our love for animals with care for people with special needs.
In addition to financial obligations that go along with raising a puppy, and Havey Vlasses take the dog to class and teach them the house and label the public until they are old enough to enter a home training program.
"You could see our four-legged friends on the campus of Loyola, from time to time, "said Havey, RN, Senior Systems Analyst, Medical Center Department of Information Systems, LUHS. "Part of our responsibility as volunteers is to acclimate the dogs to the public. The Loyola community has so generously supported the training and use of service dogs on campus.
When dogs are about 15 months old, and Havey Vlasses return to Regional Training Center CCI for six to nine months where they are trained to be one of the four types of assistance dogs.
The dogs are trained to help with physical tasks and provide social support to their partners. These dogs learn 40 commands to improve independence of people with diseases ranging from spinal cord in multiple sclerosis.
Facility Dogs are trained to work with a professional in a visitation, education or health facility. They can carry more than 40 orders designed to motivate, rehabilitate or relieve customers with special needs.
Pet dogs are trained for skilled work with an adult or a child with disability under the auspices of a facilitator. Disabilities served include cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, autism and Down syndrome. A companion may also qualified as a social gateway for people who are not used to relating to a person with a disability.
Hearing dogs are trained to recognize and alert partners to different sounds, such as a doorbell, alarm or smoke alarm. The average life of each dog is eight years. After this time the dog retires to live out his golden years as a pet.
Havey and Vlasses believe that animal-assisted therapy will eventually become a standard of care for healing. The couple will continue to advocate for this option therapeutic commitments through public speaking and philanthropic work.
