Are you considering a canine companion, a dog to have around, or a puppy pal? There are advantages and disadvantages to consider cons puppies dogs adults. Puppies are great fun but hard work. Puppies need lots of attention, much more care and training and many, many times Reading. Puppies can not be left alone as long as adult dogs. They must be supervised at all times or kept in a secure place of such a crate when you can not watch them. They need frequent trips outside to relieve themselves, they eat several times a day. An advantage having a puppy is to train and socialize the dog right from the beginning. A puppy quickly stick with family members.
Your home should be protected child latches on cabinets where potentially dangerous things like cleaning supplies are kept. Puppies are curious and explore everywhere often by chewing. New puppies often have difficulty adjusting to being away from their litter mates and your sleep will be interrupted for the first days after you return home.
Housebreaking a puppy can be a messy chore. We must be patient when the puppy makes mistakes. The good thing about a puppy is that it is a tabula rasa: he can be trained and socialized so he is a perfect fit with your family. You not to worry about him away from bad habits.
An alternative is to adopt an adult dog from a shelter or a house home, or breed rescue organization. An adult dog is usually already very high and can be left alone for long periods of time. With an adult dog, you know right away what you get in terms of: the size of the dog's temperament, activity level and personality. What you do not know is past the dog, what may have happened that led the dog is in a position to be saved or abandoned. Adult dogs may have behavior problems developed because of past neglect or abuse. It may take time for you and your adult dog to develop new trust. Some adult dogs may be nervous or have separation anxiety when is introduced into a new house. Treating an adult dog with respect and affection. Speak softly and not move quickly until you know your new canine companion and he knows you.
Do not make the mistake of treating dogs adult toys like miniature schnauzer, like puppies. They are not. Some small dogs do not realize they are small (as some Great Danes think they are lap dogs). Toy dogs should be house broken and well behaved, just like their larger cousins.
Many well-trained, sociable dogs are available for adoption, however, and you can certainly find one that fit right into your home with minimal stress or adjustment period. Remember to give the dog extra care, attention and love when he first comes into your house. If he feels completely welcome and loved, he must make a transition sweet.
