Small dogs are full of charm and personality. Over time more and more new breeds have been created by selective breeding, dogs with an appearance of certain characters and certain features. Small breeds of dogs came into our lives for various reasons. Some small dogs, such as Dachshunds and Yorkshire Terriers have performed specific tasks by hunters. Other small dogs such as Pekingese, Shih Tzu and Maltese have been created specially for companion for well-done and the nobles. All land in the world has produced its own breed of small dogs. The situation has however changed with the French Revolution when privilege based on social class has been questioned. The middle class began to own expensive purebred dogs that were easy to distinguish from mutt. The popularity of purebred dogs began to increase.

Breed standards describe all races from head to feet, height, weight, general appearance and character traits. A breed standard specifies how the ideal representative of each breed should look. Nature does not allow for uniformity perfect for these breed standards set by "people". A standard is only a goal towards which implies that farmers are coming closer can create. Unfortunately, these rigid standards call for things that have created unnecessary health problems and characteristics unnatural for a dog. For example, noses that have been bred to be excessively short impede the dog's breathing and can cause pinched nostrils, which can lead heart problems. Some breed standards call for legs so short that the dogs can not walk properly. It is the purpose of dog clubs and officials associations work against the excesses of this kind.

Small dogs differ from large dogs only in terms of their size. It need not be too protected. It is true that small dogs are more susceptible to diseases just because they are small. Instead, the life expectancy of dog small size is more than big dogs.
