The Briard is a large powerful dog with eyes without head or tail. It makes a good watchdog and a good watchdog. She loves her human family and is intelligent enough easy to train. She needs a little grooming and attention to keep her coat healthy and looking good.
Approximate size of adults
The approximate adult size (two years or more) of Briard male is 24 to 27 inches at the withers (highest point of the shoulder) and 75 to 90 pounds. Ranges female 22 to 25 inches at the withers and 75 to 85 pounds.
Special Health Considerations
Most dog breeds have inherited some health problems associated with that specific breed and the Briard is no exception. Keep on the lookout for canine hip dysplasia (genetic based looseness in the hip can cause pain of arthritis and lameness), progressive retinal atrophy (hereditary disorder of retina can cause vision loss and blindness), cataracts, stomach torsion and bloat (gastric dilation-volvulus, the second leading cause death of dogs, can kill within the hour, this space is too limited for a complete explanation but you should read about it). Feeding more than one times a day and avoiding exercise right after meals may help guard against bloat. This disease list is an informative guide only. Other disease, may also be significant threats, please contact your veterinarian for a complete list.
She should visit veterinarian several times in the first year for shots, boosters and check. Then, as an adult, she should visit the vet annual shots and check. Growing up, six years and on she should visit the veterinarian twice a year for checkups and shots. Remember, and avoid feeding your dog sweets.
Grooming
The Briard has a rough coat, dry and hard long flowing hair. It needs extensive grooming to look good and prevent matting. Brushing will help her maintain a clean and healthy coat and also help you keep a closer eye on her health and strengthen your emotional bond with your pet. His pads of his feet need excess hair removed.
His ears must be checked once a week and be kept clean. If you have kept it professional, make sure ear cleaning and inspection is part of the package. No water or excess fluid should make the ears of dogs, and do not try to irrigate the ears. Cleaning the ears is too complicated and critical to instruct here. Look for hair growing in the ear canal, the excess wax or moisture. If her ears have a discharge, odor nauseous or she seems to be in distress and you suspect an infection or tumor, consult your veterinarian.
His teeth should be brushed at least twice a week with toothpaste and toothbrush designed for dogs. Brushing removes plaque and tartar that can cause cavities (rarely) and periodontal disease. Dog periodontal disease can lead to pain, tooth loss, bad breath, another serious illness.
The nails may need to be examined for growth and clipped regularly. The rear toenails grow more slowly than the toenails of the feet before. In general, a guillotine type trimmer is the best for this task and competent instructions to accomplish what can be found on the net.
Lifetime
The Briard can live between 10 and 12 years with proper nutrition, medical care and excellent living conditions.
History
The Briard is in France and is descended from some of the older dogs. It is believed that the Emperor Charlemagne was about 1200 years. Thomas Jefferson may have been the importer Briard original to America. It was first registered by the American Kennel Association in 1928.
