Labrador, formerly known as the Lesser Newfoundland, is race the most popular dog (by registered ownership) in the world, and by a significant margin the most popular breed by registration in United States (since 1991), and the United Kingdom. It is also the most popular breed of assistance dog in the United States, Australia and many other countries, in addition to being widely used by police and other official bodies for their detection and working capacity. They are exceptionally affable, gentle, intelligent, energetic and good-natured, and Labradors are generally considered good companions for people of all ages (due to a high level of patience and tolerance for children), making them both excellent companions and working dogs. Through training, the Labrador is one of the races more reliable, obedient and versatile in the world.
History
The ancestors of modern Labrador originated on the island Newfoundland, now part of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The breed emerged over time Water Dog St. John's, also an ancestor of the dog of Newfoundland (Labrador which is very close), by ad-hoc farms by early settlers in the mid to late 16th century. The ancestral home of the Dog in St. John's have variously been proposed to be crossing hound the black St. Hubert of France, the working dogs Water Portugal, old European pointer breeds and dogs belonging to the indigenous peoples of the region. Dog St. John's, two races emerged, the most important has been used for towing, and evolved into the big dog of Newfoundland and sweet, probably as a result of livestock with mastiffs brought to the island by the generations of Portuguese fishermen who had fished at sea since the 1400s. The small Retrievers Short-coat used for retrieval and pulling in nets from the water were the forebears of the Labrador Retriever. The white chest, feet, chin and muzzle characteristic of John's Street Dog often appears in Lab mixes, and occasionally manifest in Labs as a small white spot on chest or stray white hairs on the feet or muzzle.
