Terrier breeds have come a long way from its origins in Britain and Ireland. If dogs bred as hunters and drivers pest in the 18th century, have now been developed and are being developed as companion dogs and pets. In the old days, most terriers were parked on the farms to catch rabbits and rats that destroy crops. Fell terriers and hunting is used to hunt and kill foxes. Several also were known for their swimming skills and were used to catch even the otters in deep water. Then, terriers were divided into two types, short legs and varieties long legs.

These days, the Terrier breeds are classified by their function and size. Despite being raised primarily as pets, there are still terriers used for hunting. They are now classified as working terriers, also known as types of hunting. It is used to track and location of the quarry. These terriers workers go underground, sometimes even to the quarries of screw. Examples are Patterdale Terriers and Jack Russell Terriers. There smaller versions of full grown terriers known as toy terriers. Terrier still retain characteristics without training, and should not be confused as a dog lap. Yorkshire Terriers are excellent examples of toy terriers. Finally, there are also terriers are classified as type bull. Originally crosses between bulldogs and terriers, became a separate breed in 1800. A bull terrier type number, such as American Pit Bull Terriers, are being used as fighting dogs, which is illegal.

The classification of breeds of terriers can also depend on different race groups. The international organization of Federation International or FCI Cinológica terriers classified into sections, the categories noted above, while local kennel clubs just put together all terriers in a group.
