Lyme disease is an infection transmitted by ticks that can cause serious illness. Named after the town in Connecticut where a cluster of cases have been diagnosed in the mid-1970s, the disease has now been reported in much of the United States with the highest levels of infection on the East Coast from Maine to Maryland in MidÂwest higher, and California. The cause is a type of bacteria in the form of screws, known as a spirochete, which is transmitted by several species of tiny ticks. Although these ticks are most often on deer, rodents and other wild animals, they also bite humans. The first sign of Lyme disease is usually painless, red rash shaped donut that develops at the site of the tick bite in a few weeks although in some cases it occurs earlier. It is often many people do not know they were infected with Lyme disease because they are conscious of having been bitten by a tick. (Up to half of those bitten develop failure of the eruption warning.) Without treatment, months, weeks or even after the bite, arthritic, cardiac, and / or neurological complications may occur. The most common manifestations are joint swelling, pain and stiffness. Less common complications include cardiac arrhythmias, meningitis, neurological disorders such as paralysis, and depression and other psychological problems. Infection in pregnant women may lead to fetal death and miscarriage.

Studies and procedures diagnostic

There are blood tests for Lyme disease, but they have limitations. For example, it may take months for an infection to produce a result positive tests using anti body. This situation should change if experimental tests keep their original promise. In the meantime, a diagnosis can often be made on the basis of symptoms and likelihood of exposure to a tick bite.

Medical treatment

Lyme disease can usually be cured with antibiotics, especially if treated in its early stages, before complications occur. In the past, penicillin Cline or tetracycline were the drugs of choice, but therapy helps curÂrent doxycycline, a tetracycline more easily absorbed, or amoxicillin, power penicillin derivatives increased. Doxycycline is the most commonly used because it must be taken twice a day and causes fewer side effects gastrointestinal as amoxicillin, which must be taken three times daily. More serious infections, including those involving the central nervous system, may be treated with ceftriaxone (Rocephin), which is a new antibiotic that is given by injection or intravenously. Approaches and later manifestations severe Lyme disease remain controversial. Generally, treatment at this stage is longer and more intense. It may be necessary to follow two four weeks of treatment with intravenous ceftriaxone or penicillin G, in particular the central nervous system complications such as meningitis. Therapy May be given intravenously in a hospital, an outpatient clinic or at home by a visiting nurse or therapist IV. If symptoms persist despite treatment with IV antibiotics, some doctors recomÂmend long-term therapy intravenously. Others believe this approach is futile. Other Medical treatment depends on symptoms. For example, Lyme arthritis generally responds to aspirin, ibuprofen and other non-steroidal drugs antiÂinflammatory. People with certain types of cardiac arrhythmias may be treated with drugs antiarrhythmia, others may enjoy the implantation of a pacemaker. Inflammation of the eyes may be treated with antibiotic eye drops. Medication may also be prescribed to treat depression. The vaccine against Lyme disease are being tested in areas of Connecticut, where the disease is widespread. If proved effective, Lyme disease become a preventable disease.

Alternative Therapies

Physical Therapy. A physical therapist can suggest exercises that will help keep the inflamed joints function and preserve mobility, but at the same time does not damage. An occupational therapist can teach new ways to perform everyday tasks with minimal pain.

Tai Chi

Treatment of self

Self-ideal treatment is to prevent Lyme disease by avoiding bites ticks. When you walk in areas infested with ticks, wear colored clothing on which ticks are more visible, and spraying with Locust. Apply insect repellent containing DEET, preferably in a concentration of less than 35 per cent to exposed skin. (Check with your doctor before using DEET on young children, it may cause seizures.) Also, try to avoid brush and dead leaves. Shower as soon as possible after any excursion in a region known to be inhabited by ticks, then yourÂself consider carefully. If you find a tick attached to your body, remove promptly by grasping with tweezers as close to the skin as possible and pulling gently. The sooner it is removed, the greater the risk of not transmit infection. Place the tick in a closed container so that it can be considered if you develop symptoms. Make sure all cats and dogs are tick collars, and pet comb regularly to remove any ticks.

Other causes Lyme Symptoms

Symptoms similar to arthritis disease Lynne may be caused by rheumatoid arthritis, lupus syndrome and the sender of funds, a type of infectious arthritis. Neurological symptoms may be due to encephalitis and other central nervous system infections. Depression and chronic fatigue syndrome may also be confused with disease Lynne.
