The reality is that there are hundreds of dogs are lost each year are never found again. This is a sad statistic that most dog owners hope never happens to their beloved pet. There are certain things you can do to help minimize the risk of losing your dog and maximize the chances that your dog will be returned to you if it is lost.
The following tips will help to prevent your dog from getting lost in the first place:
· Always take your dog on a leash when you go. Do not take the dog out of the car without first having to attach the leash before opening the door. Use a leash with a loop handle that you put on your wrist to avoid being withdrawn from your fingers with a sudden movement of the dog.
· If your hands are full, making two trips. Take the dog in one trip and packages in another. With too many things you have is likely to miss the leash, giving the dog the opportunity to flee.
Crate train your · dog if possible and always keep them in the crate when they are in new contexts or poorly known.
· Avoid letting small children or people who not familiar with your dog handling or walk your dog when you are away.
· Security Check your fence, a kennel or run frequently. Repair any shims, damaged areas or spots the dog has been digging once they are identified.
· Keep your doors locked and secured, especially when the dog is left outside in the yard.
To help the recovery a lost dog:
· Always have a current picture of your dog. This is important if you are traveling or away from home. Digital photos are great because they can be easily reproduced when necessary in most photo stores or computer centers.
· Know the number for the local shelters, rescues and animal control places where you are staying. Most veterinarians and veterinary clinics display Also announcements of animals lost or missing.
· Keep a collar on your dog with a tag identification that is current. At least have a current telephone number on the label. If you go on vacation to a remote location consider having a special label, made with your cell phone number or a number where you stay.
· Microchip your dog. It is a procedure simple and painless as a tiny microchip implanted under the skin of the dog. A simple analysis of a shelter or veterinary office will provide immediate contact information for housing to contact the owner. Keep all information current.
Once you find that your dog is missing contact your local animal control, shelters, rescues and even local veterinarians in the region. Notify the association of race and thus be prepared to make flyers, run an add in the newspaper or even post pictures of your dog on the Internet.
The loss of a dog is always stressful and traumatic, but having a plan on how to locate the dog will eliminate part of the problem.
