AKC / UKC Why are we better?
I notice that whenever someone mentions UKC, they get a Thums down. Why? I understand AKC is that the main register in the United States, but what about those of us who breeds not yet recognized by the AKC? Dog Estrela Mountain for a ..... It was recognized by UKC, but only very recently been noticed by AKC. There are other breeds too. Why so many people down on UKC? For those of us with a working dog such as livestock Guardian Dogs, UKC seems a good thing.
UKC is well respected register that breeds many records not yet known (or strongly agreed) by the AKC. For example, the Leonberger, the Belgian Laekenois. One of the "new" AKC recognized breeds are the Plott Hound ... which has been recognized by the UKC for years. This shows UKC obedience, conformation shows, shows agility, hunt meets, etc. UKC has also taken a stand not about registering dogs, puppy mill, contrary to the AKC. Their policy on puppy mills can be read on their site http://www.ukcdogs.com/Policies.htm The only down side is that they offer UKC that happened throughout the country not the AKC. Perhaps in time this will change.
