Help with cat / dog problem!?
I want a dog more than anything! problem is that I have a sphynx cat who enter into a state of "depression" at any time, we tried to introduce a dog into the house at different times. these dogs were large breed dogs (active and quiet). She hides and refuses to eat / drink. She has 2 years and has always been the only member of our family. We have no children, just me and my husband. She is very spoiled, territorial, and joined us. for us it is more than just a cat that we love - it means everything. Is there any hope for us to still have a dog without her being unhappy? Perhaps another race? a different approach? Does she still be miserable? If yes, how time will it be until it arrives there? My husband refuses to make her suffer for a fair amount of time so we can have a dog. this expectation is reasonable in this situation? Please do not answer this question if you can not give complete answers to all concerns listed! Experienced pet owners should meet!
Hi there ... Cats are very territorial, by nature, so it is quite stressful for them to have other animals entering their home they consider theirs. They are new members as an intruder. Some cats may be introduced to other animals, but it is very dependent on their individual personality. Because you said that your cat would not eat / drink for a few days it would be of great concern that cats can develop a fatal disease called hepatic lipidosis if they are unable to eat for several days or more. (see http://www.peteducation.com:80/article.cfm?cls=1&cat=1327&articleid=217) With honestly, this May prevent you from having another pet in the house. There are ways to introduce dogs to cats, but first and foremost, I would be concerned that your cat stops eating / drinking. Here are some articles about how to introduce dogs to cats in home if you decide to tackle this again. Please note that each site has a few suggestions which may be more useful than the other http://www.sfgsrescue.org/articles/cat.htm http://www.leerburg.com/dog-cat.htm http:// www.paw-rescue.org/PAW/PETTIPS/DogTip_Cat.html
