Irish Setters are the oldest in the group setter and originate in Ireland. The Irish Red Setter Club was formed in Dublin in 1882, driven by the breeding program of The Count of Enniskellen, who developed the signature solid red coat. However, the winners are important in the late 1800s, yet had some white markings or black.
n the 1940s the breed was nearly decimated by the progressive eye retinal atrophy, better known as ARP. This disease is a sex linked to genetic disease that causes night blindness. Fortunately, we now know how DNA test to identify carriers and therefore eliminate a breeding program. And the race has recovered and the incidence of PRA is significantly reduced.
The Irish Setter is a very intelligent dog and obedience training early is essential to get this dog back if the head is lowered. Being a hunter, while an easily distracted one, it will follow a scent at all if not able to return to its owner. With patience and kindness, the Irish setter is easy to train and may even compete in obedience trials. This is a sensitive breed though and do not respond well to harsh correction. This breed matures slowly both physically and mentally, and should never be taken too far, too fast. It can be very tenacious and independent.
The Irish Setter is undoubtedly the most beautiful SOGS and its charming nature makes is an ideal pet for someone willing to give a lot of time and patience in training.
Physically, to be are the length and level thin head should be twice the length of the width between the eyes. There must be a distinct stop and a well-defined occipital, so that the head profile is slightly convex with a deep muzzle is fairly square in the nose.
