Iowa Dog Breeders

There are about 3,500 stores for pets in this country that sell puppies. They sell about 500,000 births per year and may announce the puppy and AKC registered. AKC papers mean only that the puppy is 2 parents purebred. It does not guarantee quality or health.

The majority of these puppies come from mills puppy. A puppy mill is a large commercial operation that sells large quantities of puppies, often several different pure breeds. The breeding activity is usually located on a farm. Most puppy mills are located in only seven states, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania is known as the capital "puppy mill in the East".

In these commercial breeders, dogs, they are treated like cattle breed, not different from cows or pigs. Often, farmers are farmers who can not do if its financial situation their crops so they supplement their incomes by breeding dogs. The dogs are kenneled often in barns or other buildings without heating or cooling. There can be hundreds of dogs and puppies. The females are raised to their first heat and every round thereafter until they no longer produce children. Then they are killed because they no longer provide any income. These sluts are as young 5 years.

Because dogs and puppies in large commercial breeding enterprises are used as a form of income, farmers or ranchers do not bother with veterinary care. The food they receive is virtually no nutritional value, causing many problems health particularly among pregnant females. One of the most horrific abuses inflicted on dogs and puppies is a procedure known as the sawmill. This is done by destroying the vocal cords.

Because of how these puppy mill babies were born and raised, they almost always have health problems. There are a lot of inbreeding, leading to genetic health problems. These health problems may not even occur as the puppy is older, if he lives long enough. Even if a dog survives the physical health issues, the puppy is likely to have behavioral problems a lack of socialization.

There are many groups who fight constantly to change legislation to protect these animals, or eliminate rearing large commercial altogether. One of the most important movement is to educate people to stop buying puppies from pet stores because they represent the largest buyer of puppy mill puppies. If you want to get involved, or how you can help you can find an organization on the Internet, or contact the United States Humane Society or your SPCA.

The findings of a decade of further investigation into the genetics of dog breeding have been incorporated into this new edition of a classic source of information for breeders. Early chapters outline the basic principles of heredity, illustrated byexamples from the dog. Modern methods of animal improvement which can be called upon to further the aims of dog breeding are also discussed. The chapters on colour and coat variation, genetics of breeds, and abnormalities heve been extensively rewritten in the light of new findings. Many outstanding problems of breed genotypes have been resolved, but at the same time numerous genetic anomalies have been identified through greater genetic awareness and attempts to secure breeding data. The descriptive summaries of these abnormalities, substantially documented, make this book a useful reference source for the identification of known genetic anomalies.
