What breeds are used as guide dogs?

Many people wonder what breeds of dogs are most commonly used as Guide Dogs for the Blind. Guide dog organizations recognize the dog breeds most suitable to be used as guide dogs for the blind as Golden Retrievers, Labradors and German shepherds. These races are the most frequently requested, but not excluding other breeds like Poodles, Collies, Boxers, Chesapeake Bay Retriever and Airedale Terrier.

Some programs guide dog Cross breeds like choose a Golden Retriever / Labrador cross. The Golden / Lab cross is very popular to be used as guide dogs for the blind, since both breeds are known to be intelligent, have a strong work ethic and early maturation. During the First World War, German shepherds were the dogs home. They were chosen primarily for their availability. But their training and temperament are perfectly suited for the job they were high at work, often for very long hours, they were formed, and they were smart enough to solve problems or situations beyond the scope of their training. Most guide dog programs, then moving to Labrador Retriever, because the image of German shepherds deteriorated among customers. The American Kennel Club (AKC) Top Ten Rankings of the most popular show dogs of the Labrador Retriever reigns always supreme. Dogs on their list, are widely used in many guide dog programs throughout the world. All three of the four top ranking the highest are: a Labrador Retriever, German Shepherd and Golden Retriever. Organizations guide dog recognizes the ability of these breeds and adaptability to qualify guide dogs and support the basic needs of their owners to enable them to experience independence and freedom in the life they choose to live.
