True or false: Guinea pigs are small animals that hybrids were grown and crossbred pigs from wild-caught origin on the island of New Guinea. The fact that this animal was cons originally bred in the laboratory to create a breed of pig that was both friendly disposition and small enough to keep as pets is why the Guinea pig is still associated with laboratories in most our minds today.
Yes - I made all this up. Guinea pigs are more pigs in New Guinea of a pineapple is a Grandma Smith sprouting from a pine. It's all a sad, misleading deception. Guinea pigs are not pigs, nor are they associated with New-Guinea, Guinea Old, Young Adult Guinea Guinea nor any other that we know of elsewhere.
So, as our name suggests, the name "Guinea-pig" is an outright lie. These little animals are not some form of piggy dwarf mutant. It would be ridiculous for children (they are really tiny, tiny actors wearing costumes dwarf mutant pig). Â Well, I made that up too. They are in effect in rodents of the genus Cavia (which is why they are also mentioned as Cavies). rodents, they are related to chinchillas and porcupines - not pigs and wild boar.
Originally, Guinea pigs came from South America - not New Guinea. All of Guinea pigs that we know about pets - which is to say - they exist not occur in nature more. A very important parent of Guinea called the capybara pig is still alive in the wild in South America. Irony fate, because of its great size, the capybara appears that this might be related to a pig or boar rather than his real cousin, the domestic Guinea Pig. What family of confusion, the Guinea pigs.
So why people call this cute little South American rodents a Guinea Pig? It is not clear, since it was misleading name given to this little creature there for many years. Some people have assumed that the Guinea pig was given this name because it makes a noise that sounds like a pig squeal. Others argue that, although its characteristics not differ greatly from a pig-rooster, pig, Guinea has a round, stout, short-legged silhouette - like that of a pig or pork. Furthermore, Guinea-pigs are greedy which could also account for the reference of pork.
For Guinea "portion" of the name, some believe that this may have been derived from a region of South America named Guinan. Another theory is that the trade routes that originally brought the lovable rodent in Europe could have passed through Guinea and may have given their name to the little fuzzy rodents.
Anyway, I hope this article has cleared at least some of the mysteries of Guinea Pig. We may not know exactly where the label came from Guinea pigs - but we do not know exactly where it did not come of. Guinea pigs are not pigs, nor are they New Guinea. They are rodents, and they are originally from South America.
