Gun Dog Whistle Training

Gun Dog Whistle Training

Okay. I do not understand. We have separated the tears in the eyes of the Shadow, a black Labrador / Golden Retriever mix, mother, brothers and sisters and brought home in a shoebox, when he was weaned. Of course, he cried a lot those first few days following the trauma Switching "families". He quickly adapted and became one of our family my wife, our son, our daughter and me. But from from almost the beginning, he showed responses that I thought should be the result of training - and yet he did not have none (Nada) training. I'll give you some examples and see what you can do this

Hand Signals

The first thing we noticed that he has obeyed many hand signals. What? In the absence of training? No rewards and measures in practice again and again? Nope. When the weather was a bit cold and wet and I do not want to get off our porch in the country here in Missouri, I would let it run around the front yard, sniffing and doing his thing pot. When he was still in puppy where it would go too fast and fall on the chin, once it was too far to neighbor to the right court. I whistled and waved to the left. It obediantly trot around the middle of the front yard and stopped looking at me. WTH? I motioned to the left and he moved over to the left and looked again. I motioned to the right and he moved that way, stopping again and looked at me. I then made the sign, without a word, let him come in. He ran to the front door to the house - his house big dog's perspective.

I kid you not. I could not believe it and still find it hard to swallow. The only conclusion I could come was that his dog genes were so hard-coded his answer came to his genetics. He continued to obey the hand signals of his life. I am in fear of the Shadow.

I not a long list of things - lots of really smart things he did - but I have one that puzzled me as much as I written above. First, some context.

Hunting with firearms

My father was literally hunted or fished almost every day of his life. He was either early or went squirrel hunting rabbits or fishing in a pond behind pay or one of many rivers and streams in our region. Therefore, it burned me at the time when I was fourteen or fifteen years. Do not get me wrong, I like weapons and have several, I just have not had a go on the hunt since the age of fifteen. N is the weird stuff.

On a whim, I decided to dig my old .22 rifle and go a narrow range of shooting outdoors on a Saturday. Shadow was about two years at that time and had never seen a gun or a firearm before. When I entered the room with the rifle, he went absolutely mad. He got up and down, groaned and fell back toward the door and return to me. He had never seen anything resembling a gun before, and certainly nothing related to something fun to do for him. I and am always amazed. Laboratories are retreivers and are good hunting dogs - but Shadow had never gone hunting and had never seen a firearm before. It was a very sheltered dog! It does not run in gangs and do not hide. At that time, he has not even pay much attention to the television even though we caught the look when he got some younger.

I tested this off and on and every time I fired a rifle, he went nuts.

What Do You Think?

Some other explanation? Genetics is all I can find. We miss Shadow considerably. He died at the age of well-preserved 16 years. We know its genetics have been very good relations with intelligence above average and responsiveness to humans. However, what I shared with you above still baffles me.
