Your dog is not exempt from anemia. Anemia is not a specific disease, but it is the result of a disease process. Anemia occurs when red blood cells, hemoglobin, or both are drastically reduced. There are common signs of anemia dogs, such as loss of pink gum, tired, apathetic, and very lethargic. Anemia is not the same type of disease as humans. It is not caused by iron deficiency.

These signs alone justify a visit to the vet. The veterinarian of your dog will have more tests on red blood cells. The most common test is the PCV (hematocrit). 1. The diseases that cause loss of blood - these diseases can be caused by trauma or injury that severs blood vessels or internal organs. Fleas, ticks, and hookworms can cause blood loss. Intestinal tract, kidneys and tumors of the urinary tract can cause blood loss. The blood loss could be caused by diseases that prevent proper blood clotting.

2. Diseases that cause hemolysis (breakdown of red blood cells) - Diseases that cause red blood cells to destroy the following: autoimmune diseases, blood parasites, chemicals and toxins, and cancer.

3. Diseases which reduce the production of red blood cells - elimination of the bone marrow may be the result of a decrease in red blood cells due to: illness, chronic poor nutrition or nutritional imbalances, autoimmune disease, hypothyroidism, chemicals and toxins, and cancer.

Treatment of anemia can be moderate or severe. If that's life in danger, a blood transfusion may be necessary. This will stabilize a dog to allow time for the veterinarian to know the source of anemia. If anemia is mild, you must ensure that your dog can get enough nutrition during this period, especially.
