Field Spaniel

The Boykin Spaniel is a dog that is considered a truly American breed developed in South Carolina, by means of the retriever breeds such as the Chesapeake Bay the Springer Spaniel and the Cocker Spaniel American Water Spaniel. The race is indeed an "invention of America", which serve a specific purpose stranger but in the year 1900.

South Carolina hunters hunted the swamps of the Wateree River and due to the scarcity of roads in this wild country, hunters liked use a style of boat can be disassembled into pieces and put in the back of the wagon and hauled overland through stretches of desert. They needed a game and recovery dog that was so small it fits in this small boat, along with all the weapons and other equipment. The Boykin was developed to suit this purpose and later the dog also became popular as a dove hunter. The motto of the American Boykin Spaniel Club is "the dog that did not make waves."

The Boykin Spaniel is represented as the dog water seal in the 1988 South Carolina duck designed by Jim Killen, the famous wildlife artist. The Boykin appears very similar to the Field Spaniel. This is a small dog, 30-40 pounds, with an enthusiastic disposition and a strong instinct to hunt and to reclaiming the land and water. He is a good swimmer and is small enough to work through heavy brush easily. Their coat is medium length and can be wavy or flat, is a single layer of a solid brown or liver. There may be a small white mark on his chest, but white is not allowed anywhere else.

This Spaniel is very intelligent and eager to please, making a good pet family and all around nice dogs, small enough to be an urban dweller, but due to their natural inclination to hunt, of course, needs a lot of exercise and preferably be used as a hunting dog when possible. Usually it is easy to other dogs and good with children.

There are hunters who have a belief, often wrongly, that the dog will not make a good hunting dog inside and this may be true in some of the great hunting dogs more active, but the Boykin Spaniel is sufficient not only to small pet to live comfortably as a "house", but it is also very eager to please, affectionate and indeed in need of human companionship and bonds to the families of all ages.

The Boykin is generally healthy, although special attention to eyes if the dog is bred for the eye "pop" can be a problem. Dogs with health clearance of the hip and elbow dysplasia and eye certifications are the only ones that should be used for breeding. Epilepsy is also rare but can be a problem.

The Boykin Spaniel is a member of ESA (Foundation Stock Service) of the American Kennel Club, in other words, is a breed that can be considered for final admission into the AKC, but meanwhile the SFS provides an avenue for keeping accurate records of genealogical records of the race.
