Elecrtic Dog Collars
Posted in Dog Information on 07/27/2007 11:07 am by adminShould electric shock dog collars be banned? I say yes. And I do not say yes just a gentle way, I strongly say yes. The equipment should be banned because it is cruel and unreliable.
Using pain to discourage unwanted behavior is simply false. You could and should be using rewards to encourage good behavior instead of relying on punishment to train. The key is that you can and absolutely should train your dog without the use of shock therapy painful.
The concept of how this equipment works is simply awful. It allows the trainer or owner to provide a remote electric shock to a dog to punish unwanted behavior. Shock collars train a dog to respond out of fear of further pain and can even increase the level of pain if the dog continues his evil behavior.
Scientific research confirms that this method is painful and can influence the animal welfare negatively in the long term. It is clear that the use of this device is dangerous, unnecessary and inhumane.
Experiments have shown that shocks can cause reactions associated with fear and distress such as barking, struggling, hiding, biting, freezing, trembling, cowering, defecate and urinate just to name a few. They can make a dog afraid of almost everything they're looking at or smelling when they shocked.
Shock Collars also have a strong potential for abuse, especially if they fall into the hands of owners who may be inexperienced, impatient, angry, frustrated, even sadistic. Unfortunately, they often do.
All experts agree that there is absolutely no need to use such equipment. Positive, reward based training methods are more effective methods of punishment or negative reinforcement.
I have no doubt that training shock collar can be effective at least superficially, but your dog could end up being afraid of you or even damaged in the long term. The use of reward-based training is far more efficient and results in a more positive relationship between dog and owner.
Fortunately, the shock collars has been ban or control a number of countries in Europe, including France and Germany. But they are still widely available and used in the United States.
I would never consider using a shock collar on my dogs. I always used positive reinforcement to train and had nothing but great results. Remember, dogs need training, not punishment.
Please, do not use electric shock collars to train your dog. If you need information on how to properly train your dog using positive reinforcement methods, visit: Positive Reinforcement Dog Training
