While the true history of the Rottweiler is somewhat imprecise, it believe that it is an ancient breed whose history dates back to the Roman Empire. In those times the ancestors of Rottweilers were used by the Roman legions to herd and drive their cattle across the Alps. It is likely that the first Rottweillers are connected to the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog and Entelbuchers who also have Roman connections.
A route traveled by the Romans was depth Württemberg, Germany and the town of Rottweil, which became an important cattle area and was where these dogs were crossed with dogs of local shepherds to create Metzgerhund Â'Rottweiler or Dog the Rottweil Butcher's. The Rottweilers were used by butchers to keep their flocks.
In the late 19th century, race had greatly diminished due to the prohibition of driving cattle in Germany and in 1900 there was only one female Rottweiler in the town of Rottweil.
