Senior Dog - carrier / tote training advice?

My mini Dachshund is 14 now and understandably did not the same energy she had when she was a puppy. Now that the weather is warming up, we will make many trips and excursions. She likes to go with us, but it simply can not keep up anymore - if we end up carrying it. I plan to buy a carrier / tote, but it is never used alone and will probably scared her at first. Does anyone have any tips / training tips for me?
