Dog Training Positive Negative Punishment

Dog Training Positive Negative Punishment
Why so many people think it is appropriate to use positive punishment and negative reinforcement to train

a dog? I a fearful dog and I have never used these methods to correct behavior. I use primarily positive reinforcement (sometimes ignore unwanted behavior - I'm concentrating more on getting the behavior I want, rather than correcting the behavior I do not want). It is wise and Most people comment on what a good dog it is. Why do so many people think that punishment is the way to "discipline" of a dog? In Boston: I train those exact types of dogs at the shelter where I volunteer. At most, we use aversive such as spray bottles to disrupt behavior. Most people who resort to punishment are using on puppies and dogs that have simply not been trained yet. I should also add that if my dog is afraid, she is also somewhat Bossy - she is not submissive, easygoing dog. Yes, negative reinforcement (and only last resort). No punishment.

Because that's how it was done at the time .... people still believe that you have to "show the dog who is boss."
