Pancreatitis in dogs is similar to pancreatitis in other mammals, including humans. The pancreas is an organ that lies behind stomach and is the first segment of the small intestine. It produces the hormone insulin, which is used to help the body to normalize levels of sugar or glucose. The pancreas also produces enzymes that help the body digest other nutrients.

Pancreatitis is an inflammation of the pancreas. Pancreatitis in dogs may be caused by food consumption of the population of high fat or your dog to go into the garbage and food waste. It may appear more often after an initial appearance or surgery involving the abdomen. Some breeds of dogs such as Yorkshire Terriers and Schnauzers, seem to develop pancreatitis more easily than other breeds. Pancreatitis in dogs is also more likely to get dogs that are in their years East. Large quantities of fat or calcium in the blood, obesity, or trauma Suddenly, all may be conditions that produce a pancreatitis. It may even be a result of drugs used to treat your dog other diseases.

You can tell if your dog has pancreatitis by many symptoms, it will develop. The abdomen may be very painful and distended. Your dog may have a combination of the following symptoms:, vomiting, diarrhea, no appetite, not drinking, and depression. As the pancreas becomes swollen and painful, your dog may appear to be curled as he tries to walk.

If your dog has any of these symptoms or a combination of them, it immediately to a veterinarian. If the disease gets worse, your dog can get sepsis, which, as in people, is a potentially fatal infection of the body. Dogs may also experience bleeding from DIC, disseminated intravascular coagulation, or they can develop an irregular heartbeat.

Failure to obtain treatment can possibly cause damage not only to the pancreas, but for the surrounding organs. If from the vet in time, however, your dog can be restored to good health by appropriate treatment. The first thing your vet will do is confirm by examination and blood tests. An ultrasound or X-rays may also be necessary.

Once the diagnosis has been confirmed, your veterinarian will begin several treatments. IV fluids with water and electrolytes may be granted if the dehydration is underway. The pancreas will need to rest if no food is given to the dog for at least 24 hours, and then may begin to eat a little food low in fat. As your dog is stabilized, the food will be increased. In early May he be given an analgesic and then some antibiotics if infection is present or the vet said it may develop.

Several times, pancreatitis, even very severe in dogs can be treated successfully. Some may need to stay on a diet low in fat for life and others people may need to be given enzyme replacement. Sometimes surgery is needed. Do your part to take care of your dog is important because earlier symptoms are recognized, the better the chances of recovery.
