Everyone has seen a male dog lift his leg to mark his territory. It is an instinctive dog behavior, but why? Most people are not aware the importance behind or beyond.
In wolf packs, only the alpha male and alpha female lift a leg to mark. All other members of platoon, without distinction of sex, Beta Omega, must crouch. That's why you see men squatting and urinating few females raise their legs behind.
Urine contains messages to warn unwanted visitors and members of other packs the power of Alpha, age, and how the Pack is doing. Other brands such as trees and chew the ear wax by rubbing the soil are also used. [Sometimes you may see your dog rubbing the side of the head on the ground. It is striking.]
Because many predators in the wild, wolves sometimes roll in droppings caribou to disguise. This helps them avoid detection by the approach of enemies or predators. [The attraction of dung cat?]
For example, wolves are considered mature and leave the package in which they grew up when they have two years of age, seeking a companion and permanent pack. When two years, leaving a pack, the Alpha Male of the new territory will sometimes roll in feces of caribou and follow substantially parallel to him for a while. Smell the newcomer sends messages such as "I'd be a contributor here," or "My best experience is also a young, good hunter." The Alpha disguised then evaluates the messages and determines whether to accept the newcomer. If it does, then the whole package is.
Domestic dogs imitate these behaviors when they feel threatened. Excessive marking and rolling in manure are signs of insecurity. Territory marking enhances trust the dog. Surely there's a better way to build confidence, a way of correcting dog marking behaviors!
When wolves were frightened in the wild, they run the pack leader, and everyone licks his face and chin lovingly as they bite his chin, and the Alpha female begins cleaning his eyes. The pack members then lick and clean their faces and eyes. You see this behavior when two dogs been in the same environment and are encouraged to accept others.
Then the wolf alpha male will usually release scent glands on the beta (though it does not let anyone near his Alpha female). Then, the beta will rub to another member and they spread the scent marking around the entire package. It also stimulates the oil glands in their skin, so that their smell is enhanced personal and renewed, and their coats are kept very good condition. Above all, this daily ritual strengthens the ties of unity and packaging serves as a reminder of the power of Alpha, boost the confidence both individually and as a pack.
Sometimes, they also release scents from glands to the top of their tail. This smell is not pleasant to the nose of the man! You've probably felt it when a dog is very afraid. It is undeniable!
Many people try to cure this fear-based marking their dogs through pet and treat. Of course, this does not!
If you're home and your dog is afraid, Do not Pet him. Instead, allow him to lick his chin and cheeks. In this way, it will relax. It is an appropriate way to build confidence, using their instincts to pack your dog's advantage.
