Fleas are external parasites and not internal parasites such as tapeworms or towards the heart. Look for chips round or oval in shape with tiny legs. They cling to the bodies of dogs and suck their blood.

If you notice or observe that your dogs are themselves scratching very often you should brush hair and see if there are fleas there. If there is a major flea infestation, it should be very clear that you're likely to see some of them drop their body. If this is the case, I strongly suggest taking your dog to the vet for immediate treatment. You will also need to clean the physical environment that your dogs roam around, including their crates and beds.

However, it is likely that you may find a few chips your dog if you have that good grooming. They may have received these chips when they are taken in familiar surroundings for a walk or other dogs they have met outside.
