Is it animal cruelty to have dog spayed or neutered?

Do you think it is animal cruelty to get your dog to the vet fixed? Is it not hurt the poor puppy to have surgery? I just asked this question at a forum for pets as well (see http://www.bestforpet.com/dog-health/1336-cruel-spay-neuter-dog.html), but someone said it may be cruel but we have no choice. Can not We Just let the dog breed and avoid surgery? It must hurt them a lot. I think so. Thank you! Glenn of New Orleans, Louisiana: O)

It's wonderful that you are so empathetic to the way the feeling of your dog - the world would be a much better place is everyone respects animals like you! That being said, I do not think you should consider castration or sterilization of a animal to be cruel. A vet loves animals as much as we do - that's why they have dedicated their lives to care for them. The surgery itself is done with your dog sedated so that he does not feel a thing. There will be some discomfort as he recovers but this is manageable and if you see signs that he is in severe pain, the veterinarian can help you with that as well. And, indeed, sterilization help prevent cruelty to animals by preventing the creation of pets that may be unwanted, becoming strays, abused or euthanized. So Please, try not to beat you on your decision. Here is a link to a powerful poem about the neglect and abuse dog - something that can often be avoided by spaying or Neutering your pet. http://www.agirlandherdogs.com/category/ the-neverending Anti-cruelty-cons / I hope your dog has a speedy recovery!
