It's the usual thing, all parents through from time to time, I suppose.

"Daaaad, why can not we get a dog?

"Well, it's like the son that they take great care, they are a big responsibility, they need the power (which begins to resemble a job description for parenting in general, I know), and they need someone to accompany them on the cold dark winter nights. "Hit them hard with the triple mantra of" dog health, dog grooming and dog training 'I thought that might do the trick ........

So four weeks later I was heading there with my sister in law to the branch closest to the Dogs Trust to check some abandoned puppies from a litter that had been taken before Christmas and came up to eleven weeks and it was a crucial moment.

"What kind of dog you're looking gentleman and what kind of experience have you had with dogs? We need to take references and verify that the dog will live, if it is safe. "Heck, it began to resemble an interview with the local bank does not have searched an abandoned dog.

It might have been easier to pack a suitcase full of money and hop on the plane next to some third world countries and return to home with a baby - a controversial point of view, but I am told about the shoddy approach to most adoptions of foreign children, but I digress the subject.

There is something deeply tragic on how we treat our pets in this world (marginally better than we treat our fellow human beings that I know) and if we stop treating animals domestic dogs and especially with the same disposable mentality that we use when buying our next cheeseburger, it will only get worse.

Try making a reasoned and rational approach to what can only be best described as a truly pathetic display (in the true sense of) poverty is extremely difficult. The Dogs Trust is a wonderful organization that faces, along with many others, in a much more contested, with a tiny budget and essentially damaged goods. It is a difficult task to manage in a situation where the credo of the organization is "we do not destroy the dogs "means that there is a steadily increasing pressure on budgets. The result of all this is that you are in an equivalent Canine, a showroom car, but without the luxury cars, heating and aftershave, cheap to keep you company.

It is a very functional environment that the dogs are well cared for, fed, kept warm, safe, dry and covered medically but the Ritz Carlton it is not. The dogs are kept in pens with wire partitions and once they begin to bark the rest to join them in what appears to be fun. The people of this community seem canine recognize what is happening and pathetically struggle for muscles, making them, and generally create as much interest in them as possible. Of course there is always competition in the face, those who are really damaged, appear to have lost all interest in human contact is not remembered too fondly the lack of humanity and brutality that led them to be here first.

Interesting choice, I think, feeling a little guilty because, whatever choice I made would be at least forty or fifty of these creatures barking frantic is left here waiting for a draw at best for the "lottery of fate" on another day.

I was very conscious that the main driving force behind this choice was that I had a son aged seven, which would probably be the main pet dogs in that's life and therefore it would be wise to find a dog who got along well with humans (not as easy as you think) and children especially.

Yes, you have got, we got a puppy, a cross between a black Labrador and a Border Collie (we think). It was one of those situations tragically funny when I watched the papers and stood in front of me, "Mother - Black Labrador, Father - unknown." Apparently, litter was taken before Christmas and if the mother has been acquired at the same time and therefore known, "most likely suspect" for the Father was apparently a working dog to the nearest farm giving birth to the Border Collie, "we believe" routine.

Like most owners dog can attest, despite feeling like I accomplished a lot, this is only the beginning.
