The Brussels Griffon (Griffon Bruxellois) is the only dog in which the coat should be hard and difficult. For this reason the Brussels Griffon is probably a small advantage on the other toy breeds in that it is capable of scrambling over rough terrain. It is sturdy and bright and a little more useful companion.

The main characteristics of a Brussels Griffon are:

A large head;

Short undershot;

The Normal black eyes;

Bristling mustache;

Rough red coat;

Cobby body;

The simian more in expressing best quality;

The ears are cut by adding an alert and intelligent expression.

Breeding the Brussels Griffon

Keep in mind The origin of the Griffon is of recent date and therefore great care must be exercised in selecting authentic stock. Inbreeding must be carefully monitored cons as it is able to destroy their stamina and intelligence. Intelligence is among the most charming features of this little monkey-dog face. Without intelligence they are not true to type.

In regard to the size it should be remembered that this is not the smallest matrons that produces the smallest pups. A matron of fair size, about 8 pounds, and a small but strong father is probably the best combination to produce true to type Brussels Griffon. The Griffon was never intended to be extremely low. The best Brussels Griffons today is probably not much smaller than the original.

General appearance

In general appearance of the Brussels Griffon may be say it is a small dog from a lady of high intelligence, robust, compact. His head should be rounded, hard cover, irregular hairs, more around the eyes, nose and cheeks. The ears should be cropped to add to his expression intelligent and alert. Without ears cut this expression is lost. His eyes must be very large, black or nearly black, eyelashes long and black, eyebrows covered with hairs, leaving the eyes they encircle uncovered. His nose should always be black, short and surrounded by hair converging upwards and going to meet those around the eyes. The lips are lined with black and with a mustache. The chin is prominent. The teeth do not show. His chin is edged with a beard.

The Brussels Griffon has a tail that is straight and cut two-thirds. His coat is rough, muscular, irregular and long term.

Weight of a Brussels Griffon is ideally up to nine pounds. Lightest weight is ideally four to five kilos, which makes the Brussels Griffon a relatively small sample of a toy breed. It adapts well to small spaces but is also robust and rugged enough to roam the countryside. Very little grooming is required after a romp through even more territory. It is a good choice for active lifestyles, children and adults.
