You and your Toy Poodle is at the peak of your game look exciting when suddenly, Fluffy yelps in pain, pulls his leg and ground box dying. But after around ten agonizing minutes, he is back to normal and again on-the-go play with you. This seems a sort of joke but Not to take anything for granted because your dog suffers from abnormality of the knee.

Dislocated patella is one of the most common knee joint abnormalities in dogs. Also called trick knee, subluxation of patella or floating patella, luxating patella is a condition in which the patella, or kneecap disrupted and moves away from its normal location. The patella, or kneecap should be located in the center of the knee joint but moves out of place due to traumatic injury or congenital malformations. Sometimes, only one knee is involved, but this disease can affect both knees. Toy and Miniature breeds of dog in particular Toy Poodles are the most likely to develop dislocated kneecap. The disease usually develops in dogs between four and six months, but may also affect new born puppies.

The signs of the disease vary depending on the severity of the condition. Affected dogs usually exhibit lameness, the intermittent skipping the pain and stiffness in the hindquarters. A dog with luxating patella may show only one or all signs. Some may tolerate the problem for many years, others for life.

Luxating patella should be addressed as soon as possible to prevent osteoarthritis to develop. This weakness in the knee may also lead to other injuries such as cruciate ligament tears. For the disease being treated, four degrees of dislocation of the patella must be determined. The treatment is then prescribed based on the degree of diagnosis. Grades III and IV, and most grade II cases are treated surgically. During surgery, the alignment problem is corrected, the groove in the femur is depth so that the ball will remain in place (sulcoplasty) and the joint capsule is tight.

Ten to fourteen days after the operation, your pet's toes should touch the ground and should be using the industry well after two to three months. To help your dog to recover after surgery, additional aid may be given with the use of ramps for pets, stairs or steps.
