The Basset Hound is believed to have developed from a "curiosity" in the sixteenth century. Apparently, a point mutation in the litters Deer dogs in France where the puppies are born with short legs. (The French word "BaseT" means "set-down.") These pups were transferred high together and the short, long bodied Basset Hound was born.
The breed was introduced in Britain in the late 1800s and immediately became a favorite of the court of Queen Alexandra. In 1886, there were over 100 Bassets entry at a dog show in London. In 1892, Sir Everett Millais, considered one key "founding fathers" of race in Britain, introduced the Bloodhound in farming, in part to safeguard against the risks inherent which may be present in a small genetic pool.
Dog Baset remained popular in Britain for many years and was regularly used in pack that chased the hare. However the First World War took its toll and the dogs have become rare. In 1921, the official Basset Hound Club closed its doors for lack of membership. The race has almost completely disappeared, but a small group of enthusiasts was able to continue lines and the Basset Hound Club was reestablished in 1954.
The figures represented today in the American Kennel Club show that Baset Hound now enjoys substantial popular support in the United States. Much of this popularity is probably due to the use the Basset as a dog "poster" for the "Hush Puppy" advertising campaign of the shoe.
The Basset Hound is a long and low to race floor, with a strong frame and looks quite solid. His chest is deep and wide, almost touching the ground.
