Getting a pet is really a Zen process of self-discovery. You can not know the dog is best for you until you know. For example, a jock would prefer an active dog. A lazy slug would prefer a dog that does not require much exercise.

A buddy-buddy person prefers a friendly dog. A well-wound person would probably prefer a dog that does not bark or shed too. Consider choosing a puppy as choice a partner, you must find one that compliments your personality.

Here are some very general guidelines. Of course, we can not all breeds of dog on the planet, but they will get you thinking in the right direction:

There are dozens of breeds and dozens of features of the sort. You get the idea.

Again, these guidelines are extremely difficult. Choose a dog from these lists is like getting a phone number outside bathroom wall. There are no shortcuts. You can try to go to a dog show or talking to a veterinarian.

In our opinion, However, the absolute best way to search is to talk to friends who have dogs. Believe us, they will give you more information than you want to know: Sometimes, even more than we know.

If you do not realize all the races we have listed above are thoroughbreds. This means they are the product of parents of the same race. To get a true thoroughbred worthy of being in a dog show, you often have to pay thousands of dollars.

Most people mingle some sort (the cockapoo, "a combo of a cocker spaniel and a poodle, is very popular), because the rumor is that purebred dogs can have problems because the personality gene pool is so small (think people who marry their cousins). Consequently, many people choose to go with a mutt, a mish-mash of different races.

Mutts can combine best of two or more races in a one-of-a --
kind of dog. Having a mutt is like the canine equivalent of owning an original work of art. Benji was a mutt. And who does not like Benji?
