The Cairn is assumed as one of the subcategories of Scotland's terriers along with the Westies (West Highland White) and the Scottish, the Westies and the Cairns are highly related. For one, Westies are hybrids of white dogs crossed with Cairns of western Scotland. The Westie can be considered as the white variety of the pile of stones that has a layer any color but white. Scottish, however, have longer heads and bodies in general, have a dark coat and are outside the other two. These dogs originated in the short-haired Skyes.

Cairn is the smallest of terrier breeds group. The name Cairn was coined after the cairns that mark the boundaries of Scottish farms and graves. For the first time, this breed was used to guide smaller animals into these piles of stones. However, Cairns strong and robust, but not heavy.

This dog was already present during the 1500s, even before it became popular in 1930 after the appearance of "Toto" in "The Wizard of Oz" as Dorothy's companion dog. Today, as the American Pit bull terriers, Cairns are used like dogs company. Among the variety's talents are tracking, watching the house, hunting, and performing tricks and sports regarding competitive obedience.

Breeders should note of the health issues: Atopy, a type of cataract allergy, or loss of transparency of one or both lenses of the eyes Cryptorchidism, where the testes do not descend into the scrotum glaucoma, a disease that causes increased pressure in the eye of a dislocated kneecap, a condition where the patella Care and Exercise: Daily brushing is recommended to prevent tangles and mats. Hair around the ears and eyes should be pruned regularly. Do not over feed as weight gain easily. Their physical needs a regular exercise routine that includes a time to play every day, while in the belt. They must be of the leash while walking in public places because of their hunting instinct.

Source / History: As noted, The Cairns were existent since around 1500. Around 1700, the Isle of Skye and other highlands in Scotland were already producing lots of small terriers. Scottish Breeds divided in two: the Skye terriers and the Dandie Dinmont Terriers.

The Dandie Dinmonts were classified as a race apart. The Skyes included the Scottish, the Westies, and Cairns.

In 1912, the Cairns receive their official name according to his excellent ability to hunt insects, such as otters, foxes and badgers that were hiding in Cairns. However, it was in 1913 when they received official recognition from the American Kennel Club.

The Cairn Terrier is a heck of a small, agile dog which is very suitable for the whole family. This breed is playful, curious, and always ready to join the fun. If you are still not convinced, telling how Dorothy was entertained and accompanied by such dog.
