The Bernese Mountain Dog, known in the Swiss Berner Sennenhund, is a large breed dog, one of four breeds Senenhund-type dogs in the Swiss Alps. Sennenhund The name refers to persons called Senn, shepherds in the Swiss Alps. Berner (or Bernese in English) refers to the area of origin of the race, in the canton of Bern in Switzerland. Originally retained as dogs Farm General Sennenhund great in the past have also been used as draft animals pulling carts.

Appearance

Sennenhund like the others, the Bernese Mountain Dog is a big heavy dog with a distinctive tri-colored black coat with white chest and tan (or rust) color markings above eyes, sides of the mouth, before the legs and a small amount around the white breast. An ideal of individual well-marked gives the impression of a white horseshoe around the nose and a white "Swiss cross" on the chest, viewed from the front. Males and females have a rather large head with small V-shaped ears drooping. Height at the withers is 23-27.5 in (58-70 cm) and weigh 65-120 pounds (29-54 kg). Women are slightly smaller than males. The breed standard lists as well curly coat, mouth and eye wall ironic. Exact color and pattern of the dress are also described as useful.

History

The Bernese Mountain Dog, as Senenhund others, is alleged to have lowered of Rhode Island, crossed with livestock guardian dogs of the indigenous population of the Alps in antiquity. The breed was used as a dog all farm effect, monitoring of goods and cattle, and cattle drives in the Berne. The type was originally Dürrbächler, a small town (Dürrbach) where dogs lights were particularly noteworthy. In Bern, the weavers, the dogs used as draft animals, but dogs have declined in number throughout the 1800s. In the 1900s, farmers showed some examples of large dogs fairs, Berne, and in 1907 some breeders of the Burgdorf area founded the club first race, the "Schweizerische Dürrbach-Klub" and wrote the first standard that defines dogs as a distinct breed. In 1909, there were already 107 registered members of the race.
