Children's programming on PBS is exceptional. It educates and entertains all ages. My children have grown up with Sesame Street, Barney seemed therefore a intruders. There was a lot of bashing Barney by fans of Big Bird, Oscar and Grover. However, preschoolers love and learn Barney.
Sesame Street is for young and old alike. I must confess to enjoying watching my son. Every book I need to know that I learned in kindergarten may also have been writing on Sesame Street. I expect many teachers used the ideas of the program to enrich their classrooms, in fact, I'm sure a minority.
Many characters from beloved books have their own program on the channel PBS now. Clifford the Big Red Dog, Arthur, Curious George and the Berenstain Bears are Monday through Saturday. In addition, the wonderful book Animalia is now part of a series Animated. Super Why the program tells some of the classic fairy tales and nursery rhymes All children should know.
My favorite Reading Rainbow, this a book, then takes the viewer on an exploration into the world, sometimes related topics in the book. I used this in my fifth grade in kindergarten, where I taught. One of the most requested segments were Stella Luna. The story of the bat arises with birds is a classic. Going into a bat cave and explore other types of bats, many excited children. Digging Up Dinosaurs was another one who commanded attention, like most things on the dinosaurs. He surprised me is Mummies Made in Egypt. All eyes were glued to the TV during the program.
