The Hungarian Kuvasz the Turkish word for "protector" that his name and country of origin is most likely Tibet, however, that race was used centuries in Hungary as a shepherd dog and protector of the herd. Herding dogs are usually used to keep cattle or sheep an place to another, while the protectors of flocks are strictly used for herding and repel predators. The Kuvasz is unusual in that it performs both of these functions perfectly and was also used as a hunter of wild boar.
Today, race is used as well in the North and South America as the guardian of the flock. and sometimes more often as a pet family. It's a dog can be quite formidable and is popular as a breed that conjure the coyotes and cougars even when it works as a herdsman. Sometimes race coincides with the Great Pyrenees, but there are considerable differences. The Great Pyrenees can have some crackers while the coloring is always Kuvasz white. The Great Pyrenees has double dewclaws on the hind feet. The Kuvasz has never lugs on the back, let alone double. The Great Pyr has a deep muzzle smooth, almost as deep as wide, while the Kuvasz has a narrower muzzle. The two dogs play the role of a guardian herd fairly well, but the Great Pyr appears to be a dog is more apt to accept integration into a home as a pet.
The Kuvasz is 28-30 cm tall and can weigh up to 115 pounds. The layer may be slightly wavy and is long and double. The coat is generally flat (do not stand off "of the body) and is about two to four inches long everywhere except the nose and front legs. The ears are dropped and tilt forward. The Kuvasz is a beautiful dog and has a very strong instinct to protect.
The Kuvasz Club of America advises new owners Kuvasz that is often "impervious" to the pain. This is typical of dogs that are bred for the attack of predators, particularly in the neck and chest, which usually thicker skin and coat in this area to teeth will not be taken easily. The Kuvasz will not pay attention Electric fences and must be kept in a sealed enclosure. Then, it's not a race that should be allowed to play without a leash in dog parks.
As a member of the family Kuvasz should be exposed as a puppy to children who will be part of his family. As he grows it will start to think of his human family as part of his flock and be a great guard dog, however, care must be taken to introduce this breed obedience from the start because he has to learn that the owner is the dominant pack leader or he will take over the position and can be extremely loyal as to be threatening for the visitors. If properly trained and socialized, especially children, the dog will accept the introduction of foreigners. It is very important to socialize any dog for children and strange situations when it is young, taking a dog to obedience classes and expose it to the crowd and urban environments will help the dog to accept new situations and different in every case, but for a Kuvasz who has strong guardian instincts, he is an absolute necessity to achieve such early socialization. Kuvasz which will be used primarily as herding dogs in the country and guardians are formed in a manner that exposes them to cattle or sheep that become their flock, they often are in tension with the herd and just grow up with animals one outdoors on the farm, where they will continue to function as nature has intended.
