Staffordshire Bull Terriers, also known Staffies are known to have existed throughout the 17th century. Since dog fighting gained popularity over bull baiting, it became a must to develop a breed of dog that is agile, strong and has a more punishing head than the Bulldog.
In this context, the fight against Bulldogs then were crossed with some terrier blood. The hybrid was known as the dog or Pit Bull and Terrier. The new cross breed became well known for his tenacity and his courage, and despite their reputation of being furious against other animals they were excellent companions especially with children.
The Staffie pit dog became a favorite of steelworkers and miners alike. The breed also provided chain makers of the "Black Country "with extra income when worked against badgers or ratters.
The application of the Act on the Protection of Animals in 1835, totally prohibited sports like dog fighting and bull bait. However, a group of men in Staffordshire has chosen to preserve their breed by introducing them to entertainment industry.
Over the years, breeders have changed the name of the dog in the Staffordshire Bull Terrier to differentiate its physical bull English terrier. However, the dog's name was officially registered in 1935 by the American Kennel Club.
In 1938 a couple won Staffies popularity as Champions at the Birmingham National. The popularity of Ch Lady Eve and were Ch Gentleman Jim reached many established countries including France, Australia, Germany, Spain, Holland and even the United States. Since then, Staffies as successful as show dogs and were very popular compared to other burrows.
