The origins of Australia's Terrier are not documented, but it is believed that its beginnings were in Tasmania. Races believed to have played a role in their development are the Dandie Dinmont and Skye Terriers. There are six registered Cairn Terriers being taken to Tasmania in the 1840s.

Early Australian Terriers were known as the coated terriers raw or broken and there was also a dog known as the Tasmanian Rough Coated Terrier. The first record of a terrier coated raw manifest in Australia in Melbourne in 1868. These dogs were black with tan markings. A breed standard was developed in 1887. In 1889 The race is known as Australia's Rough Coated Terrier and dogs first sand color is displayed.

Australia Terriers were taken to England in early this century but received no public recognition until the Governor of Victoria, the Earl of Stradbroke, returned to England and took his dogs with him again. In 1933 English Kennel Club had won a race condition. He was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1960 and became the race of Australia first to be recognized officially as a breed of dog by the associations abroad.

Personality:
Although essentially a working terrier, the "Aussie" as she is affectionately known, soon endeared himself to all those he came into contact as a very desirable companion dog in itself. Affectionate and well mannered this brave little dog tends to develop its own characteristics, funny and endearing treat for the family.

Equally suited to the city or live in the country, the Australian Terrier is known for its loyalty, intelligence and even disposition. It is neither nervous nor a charlatan very persistent, but with its built-in spirit, courage and air of confidence in itself, happily assumes the role of protector for home and home. Robust and with a history of longevity, the Terrier of Australia is very supportive as a partner both interior and exterior.

Shield:
The shield of 'aussie' is composed of a hard, straight, thick topcoat of about six inches long-short layer of smooth texture. The muzzle, legs and feet are free of long hair. The coat is blue, steel blue or dark gray-blue with heavy fire in the face, ears, under the body, legs and feet and around the fireplace, or red light or sandy. The 'aussie' has a topknot of a lighter shade than the color of the head.

Color:
The colors are: blue, steel blue-gray or dark blue with heavy fire in the face, ears, bottom, legs and feet and around the opening. The richer the color and the lighter the better.

Size:
A very manageable size for city life or more owners, the Terrier Australia is about 25 inches tall and weighs 6.5 kg
