There is a general feeling that certain breeds of dogs are smarter than others. For example, Labrador Retrievers are more intelligent than cockers or Border Collie is smarter than German Shepherds. But how do we really know that a dog is smarter than the other? What exactly does it mean to be a smart dog?
Stanley Coren, professor of psychology at the University of British Columbia has asked himself these questions and set-out to find the answers. He has compiled his research and theories in a book entitled The Intelligence of Dogs, published in 1994.
Here is a list of 10 most intelligent dogs as defined in the intelligence of dogs.
1. Lhasa Apso - The Lhasa Apso was bred by Tibetan monks and was used to alert the monks of intruders in monasteries. The breed is well demonstrated in the Tibetan flag.
2. Border Collie - The border collie was raised in the United Kingdom and has been used by farmers for sheep.
3. German Shepherd - The German Shepherd is a relatively new breed of dog, having only been around since 1899. It was originally bred to be a sheep farmer
4. Golden Retriever - The Golden Retriever was originally bred in Scotland to retrieve waterfowl and game for hunters.
5. Doberman Pinscher - The Doberman was originally bred to be a ferocious guard dog. As a result of years of breading keeps the modern Doberman Pinscher is now a lively and energetic breed adapted to the camaraderie and family life.
6. Shetland Sheepdog - While the Shetland Sheepdog resembles to a miniature Rough Collie breed is true parent is the Border Collie. It is small in size and a good family dog.
7. Labrador Retriever - The Labrador Retriever is paradoxically most often known to be from Newfoundland. Originally, the Labradors assisted by fisherman dragging the heavy fishing nets. The Labrador is currently the most popular breed of dog (by registered ownership) in the world, and by a significant margin the most popular breed by registration in the United States (since 1991), and the United Kingdom.
8. Papillion - Butterflies have been a favorite of the Spanish aristocracy and today make excellent watchdogs.
9. The Rottweiler Rottweiler (which means Dog Butcher in German) was bred in Germany to be a breeder and because of his intelligence and strength were ultimately used as sled dogs, pulling carts to transport meat and other products on the market.
10. Australian Cattle Dog - The Australian Cattle Dog, also known as the Queensland Heeler, Blue Heeler and Red Heeler is a breed of dog breeding developed in Australia for droving cattle. It is medium to short-coated dog with great energy, intelligence and independent streak.
