Before choosing a particular training method, carefully examine the technique to ensure that they communicate the appropriate associations. Some methods may not communicate what he thinks. A dog-aggressive Akita was enrolled in a training program that his owner thought was reputable. The trainer convinced the owner that the only way to break the Akita of aggression toward other dogs is to let a more dominant dog put him in his place. The dog trainer shows the dominance toward other dogs, therefore placed him in a room with the Akita and left the two dogs to work things out. If this method not make sense to you, it probably makes sense for the dog, either. A trainer sent around a leaflet giving advice free to the general public how to stop dogs from digging. The instructor intends to fill the newly dug hole with water and bring the dog into the hole in the neck skin to submerge the head in the water full of holes. The next sentence in this brochure warns the owner that the dip is probably not the dog to stop digging, but forcing the dog to the water from the skin of the neck, was a show of dominance, a root cure all behavior problems. The trainer thought through enough method far to realize that the water would have no effect on future digging. Unfortunately, explains that the dog learns to distrust owner to treat to drown. Shortly after this brochure was distributed, another trainer was charged with animal abuse for employing this very correction technique.
Sometimes even thinking through a method does not lead to a clear understanding of how it works. One day a man drove up to class in a van with his dog in the back. The dog trainer explained that it was too dangerous for the dog in the back of an open truck. It was through the conference on the normal shape of the nose dog and eyes can be damaged by debris in the air, the danger of the dog being thrown out of the truck in an accident, etc. He said proudly: "I fixed the dog to jump off the truck. I was jumping up and throw me back in. We did it for five or six times when I finally got mad and threw him into the truck for the seventh time and put a piece of horse manure in his mouth just in case. After the dog never jumped again, and next time he does something bad, I'll use that trick manure again. "
It was hard to determine if the dog stopped jumping out of the truck because he got tired of being thrown back, or if he was grateful by horse manure treat. If you are unsure about exactly how or why a method works, it's probably best to avoid the technique altogether. Even the most popular methods use techniques that may not be suitable for every breed or temperament of the dog. A trainer who evaluates each method based on the effectiveness of associations and motivators will be better equipped to match the appropriate obedience method with the individual temperament of the dog.
